Anna's Hummingbird

2018 Hummingbird Day, UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Botanic Garden

Date: March 17, 2018

Location: UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Bontanic Garden, Santa Cruz CA USA

The 2018 Hummingbird Day at UCSC Arboretum and Botanic Garden was March 17, 2018.  The team at the Arboretum always does a great job setting special activities for kids, lectures, workshops, garden tours, bird tours, scavenger hunts and a group of photographers to help visitors with their photos.  I volunteer to help with the photography.

Although, the forecast was for rain it ended up being a great day for photos with a little drizzle and rain for about an hour.  This gave us great lighting and dark backgrounds.  The Anna’s and Allen’s Hummingbirds did not disappoint and gave a great show, flashing their colors for the females and guests.  Additionally, we were treated to a few  regular birds of the Arboretum including  Coopers Hawks (drying his wings), Chestnut Backed Chickadees, California Thrashers, White-tailed Kites and others.

I was also wowed by the Scarlet Banksias.

If you are in the Santa Cruz area the Arboretum is a great place to stop by for the gardens, birds and gift shop.
